ARS Clinical Staff

Clinical Team Leader:  Dr David Bowie

Dr Bowie has a background in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, and has an enduring relationship with all things aviation.  As part of his ICU portfolio, Dr Bowie overseas the Air Retrieval Service.

Clinical Nurse Coordinator (CNC):  Shane McKerrow

The Clinical Nurse Coordinator manages the day to day running of the service.

Flight Nurses

10 flight Nurses are employed by the CARS in a part time capacity between one to two days per fortnight.  All nursing staff are employed concurrently in either ICU or ED.
Several of the more experienced Flight Nurses also cover the coordination role after hours and at times during the weekdays.

Flight Doctors

Flight doctors are responsible for the medical management of the patient whilst in transit.  This is a shared responsibility with the flight nurse.  The flight doctor reports directly to the ICU Specialist on call / outreach, whilst on a mission and it is an expectation that all complex patients will be discussed with this Specialist.

In addition to their clinical roles, the flight doctor and nurse are expected to assist the pilots with responsibility for safety within and around the aircraft.

Allied Health

Input from other services is on an as required basis.  Commonly this includes midwives, and paediatric registrars.  These groups may or may not have retrieval experience and may require considerable logistical and clinical support in the aviation environment.
