Documentation

A transport summary is to be completed for every patient.  There is space for clinical details, charting drugs and fluids, regular recordings and to list any problems encountered.

On delivery of the patient, the record is copied and the copy left in the patient's clinical record.  The original is returned to the coordinator's office – information is entered on the database, the job reviewed and then the summary filed.

The flight team should comply with and follow all standards and policies as laid down in the CDHB manuals.

Meetings

 
A general operations meeting is held at Garden City Helicopters on the first Friday of every month and this provides a vital interface between aviation and clinical staff.

Aviation Staff

 
All aircraft (both fixed wing and rotor-wing) used by CDHB staff are owned and operated by Garden City Helicopters.

The Helicopter is commonly referred to as the "Westpac Rescue Helicopter", and the fixed wing division operates under the trade name "New Zealand Flying Doctors"

Aviation staff are split into two separate areas.

  1. Fixed wing Pilots
    Andrew Currie, Chief Pilot
  2. Rotary Wing Pilot
    Stu Farquhar, Chief Pilot

 

Van

 
The CARS has use of a Toyota Hiace diesel van owned by Garden City Helicopters.  It is used primarily to transport staff and equipment.  It has been configured to hold a York stretcher but must not be used to carry patients as it has not been certified for this purpose.

Aviation Security

 
All permanent nursing staff must have aviation security clearance to work airside.  This process takes approximately two weeks and involves a background police check.  They also attend an airside driving course and are issued with a Driving Permit.

Rotating medical staff are not currently required to go through this process but IT IS ESSENTIAL that you have your CDHB ID card with you on all retrievals.

Airside Access

 
Our access to the airside at Christchurch International Airport is via Auto gate 5, located behind Garden City Helicopters.

The security gate is manned from 0700-2200 7 days a week.  Aviation  Security staff will request your ID and refuse entry if you do not have it.  If for some reason you have forgotten your ID, contact the pilot on duty and they will be able to come across and escort you to the hanger.

Alternatively, Aviation Security may be able to escort, although this can sometimes cause a delay while an appropriate officer is found.  All ambulances will require an Aviation Security escort when driving airside.
