Transport Equipment

The  Retrieval Service utilises a transport "bridge" which enables standard critical care equipment to be carried easily, be accessible to clinical staff and still retain good access to the patient.  Most importantly the bridge enables all equipment to be fully secured during all phases of the transfer.

When not in use, the bridge and equipment is stored at Garden City Helicopters.  Another set is in the store room opposite ICU South pod, along with extra equipment and supplies of commonly used disposables.

  • The appropriate "bridge" is fitted on to the stretcher for the chosen aircraft prior to the transport.

  • In the conquest, there is a slightly modified "York" stretcher which will also fit into the older ambulances.

  • The helicopter uses a standard ambulance "York" stretcher.

  • The other aircraft (King Air), has a carbon fibre sled option used in the King Air.

Standard Set Up

Consists of:

  • 2 syringe pumps

  • 1 Marquette monitor

  • 1 Oxylog 2000 or 3000 ventilator

  • 1 Zoll defibrillator/pacemaker

Also required are two equipment packs (nurse only jobs may elect to take one pack only)

  • A third pack that contains specific paediatric equipment will be required for paediatric missions.

Depending on the patient / aircraft, we may also require:

  • Vacuum mattress (bean bag)
  • Small oxygen cylinder in carry bag (back up for Heli as oxygen source external to cabin)

Three supplemental small packs are used to store supplies that may be required but not routinely.  One of these packs is kept in each fixed wing aircraft, and the other is taken on all helicopter missions.

Securing Equipment to the Bridge

Each piece of equipment (except defibrillator) is secured to the bridge by means of a metal plate & locking pin; the pin pulls out and the item slides onto plate.  Ensure the pin is locked into hole.

The combined equipment is very heavy.  Always remove each piece from the bridge before attempting to lift and move it.
