Introduction

​The Department of Intensive Care, Christchurch Hospital is a 24 bed Tertiary Care Facility that provides tertiary care for the greater South Island.

The Department provides Tertiary Intensive Care Services for:

  • General Medicine patients

  • General Surgical patients

  • Neurosurgical patients

  • Cardiothoracic Surgical patients

  • Burn Injury patients

  • Spinal Injury patients

  • Paediatric patients

The Department has for many years provided Intensive Care for Paediatric patients.  This is likely to continue to expand with post-surgical patients being routinely admitted and an expanded bed capacity.

The Department admits approx 1200-1250 patients with an average length of stay 3 - 4 days.  This includes 280 - 320 cardiac surgical and 45 - 50 Paediatric patients.  Of the 900 - 1000 adult admissions, 90% are emergency medical or surgical admissions from the ward, operating theatre, recovery or emergency department. Approximately 70 - 80% of patients are ventilated.  The Department is equipped and staffed to perform a variety of procedures including the following:

  • Intravascualr pressure monitoring

  • Cardiac output monitoring

  • Intracranial pressure monitoring

  • Percutaneous tracheostomy

  • Continuous renal replacement therapy

  • Haemodialysis

  • Plasmapheresis

  • Fibreoptic bronchoscopy

  • Temporary transvenous pacemaker insertion

  • Intraortic balloon pumping

The Department of Intensive Care is recognised as a training centre by the College of Intensive Care Medicine, and is accredited as a C24 unit.  This allows trainees to have up to 24 months of service in the department recognised for training in Intensive Care Medicine.  The Christchurch Hospital is also affiliated to the Christchurch School of Medicine, and accordingly, the Department of Intensive Care participates in undergraduate training at various levels.
