Ngā Ratonga Hauora Māori / The Māori Health Service

Ngā Ratonga Hauora Māori (The Māori Health Service) is available to help patients and whānau through their hospital journey with culturally appropriate advice and support.

Specially trained staff provide āwhina/help and tautoko/support with cultural issues, education on tikanga (values and beliefs) and referral to the appropriate resources available in the community for both Māori and mainstream organisations.

A key principle is including families/whānau into care planning, decision-making and treatment. Tangata māuiui and their whānau are actively encouraged to contribute and participate in all aspects of care plans, discharge planning and multi-disciplinary team meetings.

We are collectively empowered to uphold the dignity and well-being of Māori consumers/patients and their whānau who receive our services. Our role is to:

  • Assist tūroro/patient through the hospital system and make the journey as smooth as possible

  • Be present, with patient permission, at appointments and consultations

  • Contact whānau

  • Provide information on community services that may be useful after discharge from hospital.

See our hospital pages for the Māori Health Service contact information.
