Thyroid Clinics

Appointments

  • Patients will be sent an appointment by the Clinic Receptionist approx. 1 month in advance of the appointment date. ​

Clinic Locations

Thyroid Clinics are held in two separate locations (refer to the appointment letter for details)

  • Hagley Outpatients OR

  • Nuclear Medicine Department, Christchurch Hospital

What do I bring with me?

  • A list of medications and tablets you are taking.

  • You may bring a support person if you wish to do so.

Who will I see?

  • A Specialist Consultant or Registrar will see you.

  • Report to the reception desk on arrival to verify your details, you will be weighed and asked to take a seat in the waiting area.

How long will the appointment take?

  • Follow-up appointments are 10 -15 minutes.

  • New patient appointments are 30 minutes.

  • Extra time will be required if you have been booked for a procedure, refer to your appointment letter.

What if I need to have tests?

  • The doctor may order a blood test; often this is requested prior to the appointment. 

  • Your letter will tell you if any other procedures have been booked for the day of the appointment eg. thyroid scan or fine needle aspiration.

  • Other procedures may need to be booked at a later date.

What happens after the appointment?

  • A letter will be sent to your GP and copied to you.

  • You will be informed of the test results and if any follow-up appointments are required to monitor your condition.

  • Non New-Zealand residents will be billed by the Hospital for the cost of the appointment and procedures.

Special Requirements

  • Please advise the clinic secretary if you have problems understanding or expressing yourself in the English language or have any special needs that are important to you as part of the consultation.

What if I can not attend my clinic appointment?

  • If you wish to change or cancel an appointment, please contact the clinic secretary on 3640 890, as soon as possible.

  • If you do not phone and do not turn up for the appointment, you will be sent one final appointment with a note to say that you will be referred back to your GP if you do not attend.
