About Kaikoura Hospital

Kaikoura Hospital is located in the Kaikoura District of Canterbury, on the east coast of the South Island, approximately two hours' drive north of Christchurch. It provides birthing and postnatal services and aims to provide a supportive and family friendly environment to welcome the safe arrival of your baby.

Pregnancy and birth are normal physiological processes for the majority of women. If you have no complications detected, the option of birthing at a primary birthing unit should be offered and encouraged. By choosing to birth at a primary facility, you are more likely to have a normal birth and less likely to need interventions.

The hospital is located within rural community hospital where not only full midwifery care is offered, but where a local team of GPs provides skill and expertise in both obstetrics and paediatrics to provide support and assistance.

For pregnancies and births that require additional support and input Kaikoura Maternity works closely with colleagues in Christchurch.

Facilities

Kaikoura Hospital has three maternity beds for labour, birth and postnatal care for low risk pregnancies. Postnatal home support is provided by midwives.
