Christchurch sonographer recognised

Rex de Ryke, Charge Sonographer, Radiology Service, Canterbury District Health Board, has won two prestigious awards from the Australasian Society of Ultrasound in medicine.

Rex received an Honorary Fellowship award for his continuous contributions to the society in ultrasound education and for promoting excellence in diagnostic ultrasound.

He has also been given a special Humanitarian award for the use of ultrasound in a mass trauma event, being the February 22 Christchurch earthquakes, and for teaching and sharing experiences gained during these events with the wider ultrasound community.

Rex says the Humanitarian award should be for the department and his colleagues.

"It really is recognition of us as a department and the great work the team did during those trying times and continues to do," Rex says.

Rex says that the September 2010 earthquake had shown the department that there was vulnerability with the power supply to radiology, including x-ray services in Christchurch Hospital's Emergency Department, which was being addressed at the time of the February 2011 earthquake.

On February 22, the department offered its services to ED and established three FAST (Focussed Abdominal Scanning in Trauma) scanning teams to be based there after problems with power supply and damage from the earthquakes meant the CT (computed tomography), DSA (digital subtraction angiography), MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and general x-rays and the lifts were all not working.

Rex says the use of the FAST ultrasound scanning techniques, utilised in the mass trauma situation of February 22 had been successful in allowing rapid assessment and triaging of patients.

"All sonographers are now familiar with the FAST scan techniques and are ready to assist in any future disasters."
