Public meetings to share progress on Christchurch hospitals project

Thursday June 5, 2014

Canterbury District Health Board is running two meetings in mid-June to update the public on progress of the $650 million plus redevelopment of Christchurch and Burwood Hospitals.

With the preliminary designs for Christchurch Hospital's new Acute Services building signed off last week, the project can now move into the developed design phase ahead of planned construction.

The new Acute Services building is being designed to meet the future needs of Cantabrians, and people across the South Island, for top-quality public hospital care.

When complete, the new facility will have:

  • New operating theatres,

  • Around 400 beds, including purpose-designed spaces for children,

  • An expanded intensive care unit,

  • A state-of-the-art radiology department,

  • A new emergency department,

  • A rooftop helipad.

At Burwood Health Campus, construction is already underway on a purpose-built health facility that will specialise in care for older people and rehabilitation services. The redevelopment will include 230 new inpatient beds, an extended radiology department and a new outpatient department.

The Hospital Redevelopment Partnership Group, including the chair of the National Health Board's Capital Investment Committee, CDHB's Chair and other representatives from CDHB and government agencies, is leading the redevelopment of both hospitals.

The public meetings are at the following times and locations:

  1. Wednesday 18 June, at the Canterbury Horticultural Centre, 57 Riccarton Ave, Hagley Park South 5.30 - 6:30 pm

  2. Saturday 21 June, at the Cardboard Cathedral, 234 Hereford St, Christchurch Central, 3 - 4 pm.

All are welcome to attend to hear an update from CDHB chief executive, David Meates.

A New Zealand sign language interpreter will be present at both meetings.
