An extended after-hours health care service for Waimakariri residents is being piloted by the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) following discussions with the local St John and General Practice teams.
The pilot will begin Monday, September 12, 2011.
Carolyn Gullery, general manager of planning and funding for the Canterbury District Health Board says under the extended system if a person is unwell after hours and needs urgent medical care or advice they should continue to phone their own General Practice.
“By phoning their General Practice team Waimakariri residents will receive advice and access to the right health services for their needs, 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week,” Carolyn says.
After-hours calls will be answered by an experienced registered nurse who will not only provide health care advice but can also arrange care and transport if required, she says.
“People should always, however, dial 111 if it is a medical emergency.”
The registered nurse answering the after-hours calls will coordinate one of a range of options. If you’re:
Unwell and okay until tomorrow – you can see your General Practice team the next day.
Unwell and unsure if okay until tomorrow - the nurse will provide advice and check back in two hours.
Unwell and need review – you will be assessed face-to-face by a St John Paramedic.
Unwell and need access to health care – transport will be arranged to an after-hours General Practice in Christchurch.
Unwell and need hospital care – transport will be arranged to the Emergency Department at Christchurch Hospital.
