Key appointments made for Christchurch Hospital redevelopment

Thursday July 25, 2013

Consultants have been appointed to design and project-manage Christchurch Hospital’s redevelopment.

The project includes additional operating theatres and inpatient beds, a helipad, an expanded intensive care unit, a new Emergency Department, Assessment Units, and Radiology Department, including services for children.  The new building is set for completion by 2018.

The redevelopment of Christchurch and Burwood Hospitals is New Zealand’s biggest ever health-related building project and is expected to cost more than $600 million.

Canterbury District Health Board Chair and spokesperson for the Hospitals Redevelopment Partnership Group, Bruce Matheson, has announced the following appointments:

  • Architects - Katoa Health Design including Chow Hill , Warren and Mahoney and Thinc Health
  • Quantity Surveyors – Rider Levett Bucknall
  • Project Programmers – Woods Harris Consulting
  • Structural, Geotech and Civil Engineers – Holmes Consulting
  • Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, Communications, Security, MTAV services - Beca
  • Fire Engineering and Fire Protection Design – Aurecon

Mr Matheson said the positions had been hotly contested and those chosen would be working hard over the next four years.

“Although 2018 may seem some time away, the magnitude of this project means that the pace will need to be quick from the outset,” he said.

“We lost 106 inpatient beds after the February quake and 12,000 rooms sustained damage. The redevelopment of Christchurch and Burwood Hospitals can’t come fast enough.

“It’s a very exciting and challenging project for everyone involved.  I would like to congratulate the successful consultants who will be working with us, and thank everyone involved to date for their input,” he said.
