Key appointments made to fast-track developments at Burwood Hospital

Monday April 22, 2013

Consultants have been appointed to design and project-manage the development of a new health facility for older people to be based at Burwood Hospital.

The Burwood Hospital Redevelopment project will see a new purpose-designed facility built to house hospital and specialist services for older people.    The new facility is due to open between June and September 2015.

The redevelopments at Burwood and Christchurch Hospitals are expected to cost more than $600 million and together form the largest and most complex public health construction works in New Zealand.

Chair of Canterbury District Health Board and spokesperson for the Hospitals Redevelopment Partnership Group, Bruce Matheson, announced the following appointments:

  • Project director, Burwood – Proj-X Solutions Limited
  • Architects and Health Planners – Jasmax; Klein; Sheppard and Rout, and Silver Thomas Hanley
  • Quantity Surveyors – Rider Levett Bucknall Christchurch Limited
  • Project Programmers – Woods Harris Consulting Limited
  • Structural, Geotech and Civil Engineers – Beca
  • Mechanical Engineers – Beca
  • Electrical Engineers – Beca
  • Fire Engineers – Beca
“Work is already underway to further develop the initial concept designs for the site,” Bruce Matheson said.

“I expect that we will see some activity on the Burwood site by August this year in preparation for the start of construction.  Some services will need to be relocated and the site cleared before construction starts.”

CDHB lost 106 inpatient beds after the February quake and 200 buildings and 12,000 rooms sustained damage.

“We have the largest ageing population in New Zealand, so this new facility can’t come fast enough,” Mr Matheson said.

“It’s a very exciting and challenging project for everyone involved.  I would like to congratulate the successful contractors who will be working with us, and thank everyone involved to date for their input.”
