Public meeting on future Akaroa health services

Thursday January 24, 2013

Akaroa residents are invited to attend a public meeting on the future of health services in the area on Thursday, January 31, 2013.

At the meeting Canterbury DHB chief executive David Meates will provide a progress update on the development of an integrated health centre for the Akaroa Wairewa area.

Mr Meates will be joined by CDHB Planning and Funding Manager Carolyn Gullery, members of the Akaroa Wairewa Integrated Health Steering Group, and representatives from the Impact Project Group. The Impact Project Group has been commissioned to help support the process of facility design and development.

Mr Meates says the CDHB is committed to providing health services that meet the current and future needs of the region and hopes the meeting is well attended by Akaroa’s community.

“Since the closure of Akaroa Hospital because of earthquake damage in 2011 we have maintained staffing levels, supported the opening of a medical centre, and have arranged for Pompallier House to provide palliative care beds.” Mr Meates says.

He says the public meeting is an opportunity to update the Akaroa community on the progress of developing new health services and models of care suited for the future health needs of the Banks Peninsula community.

“The goal is to develop an integrated health centre that incorporates a variety of health and social services. While this is the direction we’re travelling, it is still early days in the process and I am looking forward to hearing the feedback we get at the meeting.

“Health services play a very important role in the community and it’s important that people have the opportunity to have their views considered in the decision making process.”

The meeting will take place at the Akaroa Area School Gymnasium at 4.30pm Thursday, January 31, 2013. Attendees are asked to wear soft soled shoes to protect the gymnasium floor.
