Some visitor restrictions for all Te Whatu Ora Waitaha Canterbury hospitals and health facilities remain in place, but we have relaxed others.

There is still a heightened risk to vulnerable people in hospital and so we recommend all people wear a mask when visiting any of our facilities and follow other advice designed to keep patients, staff and  visitors safe.

To keep everybody safe:

  • Visitors or support people must not visit our facilities if they are unwell. Do not visit if you have recently tested positive for COVID-19 and haven’t completed your isolation period.
  • Patients may have more than one visitor, except in some situations such as multi-bed rooms where it can cause overcrowding.
  • Surgical/medical masks are recommended to be worn at all sites. Masks will be provided if you don’t have one.
  • For Specialist Mental Health Services everyone is strongly encouraged to wear a face mask in all inpatient areas and areas where consumers are receiving care (i.e. community appointments, home-visits, transporting people). Discretion may be applied in cases where masks impair your ability to communicate effectively.
  • Visitors must not eat or drink in multibed rooms because of the increased risk when multiple people remove their face mask in the same space.
  • Hand sanitiser is available and must be used.

Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding as our staff work hard to protect and care for some of the most vulnerable in our community.

Visiting patients with COVID-19

  • People can visit patients who have COVID-19 but they must wear an N95 mask – this will be provided if you don’t have one.
  • Other methods of communication will be facilitated e.g. phone, Facetime, Zoom, WhatsApp etc where visits aren’t possible.

All of our Hospitals

Visiting hours for our hospitals have returned to pre COVID-19 hours with the exception of Christchurch Women’s Hospital.

All visitors are recommended to wear a medical face mask.

Parents/caregivers are able to be with their child in hospital and visitors are now allowed, except for the Children’s Haematology and Oncology Day stay where just one parent/caregiver is able to attend their appointment with their child. Exceptions by special arrangement only.

Community Dental Service

About the Community Dental Service - Free Dental Care from 2 years old to 18th Birthday

The Community Dental Service provides free dental care for eligible children living in Canterbury and South Canterbury. We also help teens find a free family dentist. Pre-school children (0-4 years) have their teeth checked and treated in a Community Dental Clinic. We have 14 clinics throughout Canterbury. Our dental vans visit primary and intermediate schools to check children's teeth. School aged children visit a Community Dental Clinic if they need treatment.

If your child is in pain, please contact us to book a Relief of Pain appointment. If we are unable to offer your child a Relief of Pain appointment, we will help you get an appointment at a family dentist for free.

The Community Dental Service provides free dental care for eligible children living in Canterbury and South Canterbury. Children ARE eligible for free dental care if they are a:

  • New Zealand Citizen
  • Permanent Resident
  • Or have a parent or primary caregiver on a 2 year work visa (consecutive)

Whānau new to Canterbury

If you are new to Canterbury and contact us to enrol your child, we will ask for your child’s National Health Index (NHI) number. If you don’t know your child’s NHI number, we will ask you for more information (date of birth, full name, etc) which will help us find their NHI number.

To check your child is eligible for free care, you may be asked to scan and email your child’s passport and your visa documents, or citizenship certificate, to commdental@cdhb.health.nz

Interpreter Services

Interpreter Services are available for people who are deaf or do not speak English as their first language. The service is available 24 hours a day, is free of charge, and has a large number of languages available.

The service will be able to help with enrolling your child or booking an appointment. An interpreter may be able to attend an appointment with you.

Baby

Since May 2017, all babies born in Canterbury and South Canterbury, are enrolled at birth with the Community Dental Service, unless parent/caregiver declines.

All children should have their first dental check around 2 years of age.

Pre-school and school aged children

Parents and caregivers can enrol their child by calling 0800 846 983 or emailing  commdental@cdhb.health.nz

Your Well Child/Tamariki Ora Provider, Family Doctor or Public Health Nurse can also help with your child’s enrolment.

Teenagers

To enrol a teen in free dental care, contact a free family dentist. If you need more information you can contact the Adolescent Oral Health Coordinator, 0800 825 583 or freedentalcare@cdhb.health.nz

Whānau new to Canterbury

How to book

To book an appointment for a pre-school or school aged child, please call 0800 846 983 or email commdental@cdhb.health.nz. You can book an appointment Monday—Friday, 8:45am—3:30pm, during the school term. You can book an appointment at any Community Dental Clinics.

If you have more than one child needing an appointment, you may be able to book a family appointment. A family appointment means your children can get seen at the same appointment.

After an appointment is booked, we will send you a text reminder. You should get a text the day before your appointment. The text will confirm the time and location of your child's appointment. If you are unable to make the appointment, please let us know, as we can reschedule your child's appointment.
