Please remember, limiting our interactions with others is our best defence against COVID-19. Please don’t visit the hospital if you don’t need to. The following level 2 visitor restrictions are in place for all Canterbury DHB health facilities:

  • Visitors will be screened and asked to provide contact details upon arrival
  • Visitors who are unwell or have suspicion of COVID-19 will not be able to enter
  • Aged residential care: no visitors, however, family visits for palliative care residents who do not have COVID-19 will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Changes at Canterbury DHB hospitals and health centres

We are working closely with all our health partners to ensure we are responding effectively as a system to provide appropriate and timely care to those who need it.

Under COVID-19 Alert Level 2 visitor access for all Canterbury DHB health facilities will continue to be restricted.

If your health changes and you are concerned please call your general practice team in the first instance. Remember you can call them 24/7 – after hours a nurse will be able to provide free health advice. Just call their usual number and follow the instructions on the answerphone to be put through to a nurse.

Our emergency department is also open for all life-threatening emergencies.

FAQs about outpatients and non-urgent surgery appointments under Alert level 2

Why were appointments and non-urgent surgeries postponed?

We postponed non-urgent appointments and surgeries under Alert Levels 3 and 4 because people were safest staying at home in their bubble. This helped to keep the number of contacts people would make low. It was a crucial decision, taken to protect people and those who care for others by reducing the chance of infection spreading.

What has changed?
We have switched to Alert Level 2 which means that we can resume more everyday activities, providing we can do so safely – and that we have in place the necessary precautions.
Why are you reinstating appointments now?
People who need care, but don’t come to an appointment face a very real risk of harm. Now that we are at Alert Level 2 the risk from COVID-19 is greatly reduced and we have resumed many everyday activities, with added strict precautions to keep everybody safe. Many everyday health activities can safely resume under Alert Level 2, with the right precautions.
I have received a text or email appointment rather than the usual letter. Are these appointments genuine?
Treat these new appointments as genuine, or call the department responsible for your care or the number on the last letter we sent you if you are unsure.
Why the change, and what should I do?
We have changed the way we make appointments, to streamline the process and to ensure information gets to you on time.
What do I do if I am reluctant to come to my appointment?
It’s understandable that some people will have been reluctant to come to hospital or outpatients while we were in lockdown. Under Alert Level 2 it is unlikely that there will be COVID-19 cases in our hospitals. However, should we have a suspected COVID case, they are treated in isolation in a part of the hospital set up specifically for that purpose – away from other treatment areas.
What do I do if I cannot make the appointment that has been made for me?
Your appointment message will state who you should call and what you should do. If you can’t make the time given, please let us know as early as you can so we can make a new appointment for you. Letting us know early will also enable us to slot someone else into the one you couldn’t attend.
What additional steps are you taking to keep me and others safe?

Firstly, we are arranging more consultations over the phone or by video link and only make face-to-face appointments when they are needed to provide the right care.

Otherwise, we are:

  • increasing cleaning activity, especially toilets, food areas and surfaces that many people touch such as door handles, hand rails, furniture and public phones etc.
  • Restricting the number of entrances to DHB facilities to ensure everyone who arrives has a reason to be being there and so we can check they are well and won’t make others sick.
  • Recording everybody’s details in case we need to do contact tracing later.
  • Spacing appointments so people can sit far enough apart in waiting rooms.
  • Having information and warnings on display where appropriate – for example the physical distancing requirements.
  • Having hand sanitiser in prominent places, including entrances to facilities and in ward or treatment areas.
  • Wearing masks, gloves and aprons more often and asking people to wash or sanitise their hands.
  • Giving people a mask to wear in some circumstances – however, this is on a case-by-case basis and won’t be necessary for everybody.

If we do anything that makes you feel unsafe, please speak up. To meet Alert Level 2 physical distancing requirements, we continue to restrict the number of visitors entering the premises.

Are there any additional precautions I should take?
  1. Make sure you follow advice from staff and adhere to good hygiene measures – wash or sanitise your hands well and often, sneeze or cough into the crook of your arm, and don’t come to an appointment if you have cold or flu-like symptoms without checking with us first.
  2. Bring everything you think you will need with you. We still have restricted visiting and you may not be able to get someone else to bring in something you have forgotten.
  3. There is a phone on every ward and public phones in public areas but bring a mobile phone if you have one and its charger, and/or a tablet for staying in touch.
  4. Please don’t bring anyone with you. There are rare exceptions, but clinics need to approve in advance.
  5. The fewer people entering the hospital or outpatients, the better.
  6. If you are going to need to stay overnight, sort out in advance who your designated visitor should be and be aware that they may be the only person who can visit you during your hospital stay. Visiting will generally only be allowed once a day during certain hours.

Can I still bring someone with me for support?

Please don’t bring anyone with you, or at least check with us before you do – we are reducing the risk by keeping the number of visitors low. There are rare exceptions, but clinics need to approve them in advance.

They will have to be checked to make sure they are well, and will need to provide their contact details so we can get in touch if we have to.

If the risk to me changes, will Canterbury DHB will let me know?

All the advice at this time is on the basis that we are at Alert Level 2, which means the COVID-19 virus has been contained but not eliminated. Your safety is our first priority and so if there would be an increased risk to you because circumstances change, we will certainly let you know.

The hospital shuttle service from the Lichfield St car park is running to both the Outpatients Building and the main entrance of the hospital.


COVID-19 testing Updated on 10 May 2020

As part of the response to COVID-19, Community Based Assessment Centres (CBACs) have been set up throughout Canterbury. CBACs provide testing facilities within our communities for people who have been referred for testing. They are key to our ability to identify people with COVID-19, manage their close contacts, and stamp out the virus.

A referral from your GP or from Healthline is necessary to be tested at a CBAC. If you do not have a referral, you will not be tested at a CBAC. The exception is Whānau Ora’s CBAC on Pages Road, where walk-ins are accepted.

About COVID-19

COVID-19 (formerly known as novel coronavirus) is a respiratory illness that can be transmitted from person to person through droplets. It has spread to every continent except Antarctica and over 170 countries and territories have laboratory-confirmed cases.

It appears that most cases identified to date have mild to moderate illness. In severe cases, though, the virus can cause pneumonia and severe acute respiratory infection.

New Zealand citizens and residents returning home

Public health staff are working with border agencies to ensure New Zealand citizens and residents returning home are screened as they enter the country, and aware of the need to self-isolate and understand what that entails. Self-isolation means avoiding situations where you could infect other people. People who have to self-isolate are also asked to register with Healthline's COVID-19 advice line by phoning 0800 358 5453.

Staff at airports and ports have information on hand that advises people what to look out for and what to do if they get symptoms.
