The Professional Development and Recognition Programme (PDRP) framework and criteria have been developed co-operatively by Canterbury District Health Board, West Coast District Health Board and NZNO Representatives to achieve the following purposes:
To advance professional development in nursing;
To support nurses in demonstrating competency to the Nursing Council of New Zealand; and
This programme aims to promote and reward nursing expertise and recognise the contribution of nurses to quality patient health outcomes. The PDRP assessment criteria have been developed to align with the national framework and integrate national evidential requirements along five different levels.
The Regional PDRP is a voluntary process and nurses choosing to participate, who are successful, have the benefit of being able to renew their Annual Practising Certificates without being subject to random audit of their portfolio's by the Nursing council of New Zealand.
Nurses covered by the NZNO Nurses' MECA can also achieve financial rewards. These rewards apply at Proficient and Accomplished/Expert levels.
Senior Nurses placement on and progression through the salary scale is not dependent on PDRP, however Senior Nurses successful at Competent level will have the benefit of becoming exempt from audit by Nursing Council of New Zealand.
This entry level programme is for new graduate nurses entering onto the Nurse Entry to Practice Programme (NetP). Click here for the Nurse Entry to Practice Programme Guidelines or Nurses who have completed a Nursing Council approved Competency Assessment Programme (e.g. Return to Nursing Course). The process for this programme is yet to be defined.
This is the entry level to the PDRP programme for those staff already in clinical practice. Some staff may choose to apply at Competent level due to working part time/casually or due to outside commitments. This level can be achieved through successful completion of:
NeTP Programme (mandatory portfolio completion by end of programme)
Specialty Entry Mental Health Programme (mandatory portfolio completion by end of programme)
Or, after attending the following and then completion and successful assessment of your portfolio:
Acute Nursing Update Course
Mental Health Nursing induction
Develops partnerships with clients that implement Te Tiriti o Waitangi in a manner which the client determines is culturally safe
Effectively applies knowledge and skills to practice
Has consolidated nursing knowledge in their practice setting
Has developed an holistic overview of the client
Is confident in familiar situations
Is able to manage and prioritise assigned client care/workload
Demonstrates increasing efficiency and effectiveness in practice
Is able to anticipate a likely outcome for the client with predictable health needs
Is able to identify unpredictable situations, act appropriately and make appropriate referrals
A nurse achieving Proficient level will receive an allowance as long as he/she maintains the level of practice (see Interim Year Requirements). For organisational information on levels of practice payment, refer to your PDRP Coordinator or for CDHB staff refer to the CDHB PDRP intranet site.
Participates in changes in the practice setting that recognise and integrate the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and cultural safety
Has an holistic overview of the client and the practice context
Demonstrates autonomous and collaborative evidence based practice
Acts as a role model and a resource person for other nurses and health practitioners
Actively contributes to clinical learning for colleagues
Demonstrates leadership in the health care team
Participates in changes in the practice setting
Participates in quality improvements in the practice setting
Demonstrates in-depth understanding of the complex factors that contribute to client health outcomes
Utilises broad experiential knowledge to provide care
Contributes to the education of Enrolled Nurse/Nurse Assistant students, new graduate Nurse Assistants, care givers/healthcare assistants, competent and proficient
Enrolled Nurses Acts as a role model and leader to their Enrolled Nurse peers
Demonstrates increased knowledge and skills in a specific clinical area
Is involved in service, professional or organisational activities
Develops partnerships with clients that implements Te Tiriti o Waitangi in a manner which the client determines is culturally safe
Accomplished EN GuidelinesA nurse achieving Expert/Accomplished level will receive an allowance as long as he/she maintains the level of practice (see Interim Year Requirements). Demonstrates advancing knowledge and skills in a specific clinical area within the EN/NA scope
Contributes to the management of changing workloads
Gains support and respect of the health care team through sharing of knowledge and making a demonstrated positive contribution
Undertakes an additional responsibility within a clinical/quality team, e.g. resource nurse, health and safety representative, etc.
Actively promotes understanding of legal and ethical issues
Contributes to quality improvements and change in practice initiative
Acts as a role model and contributes to leadership activities.
