In this week’s issue of the Pānui, Medical Laboratory Scientist Jacinta Richardson made her debut for the Wheel Blacks at the 2024 Paralympic qualifying tournament in Wellington and has since represented New Zealand internationally in Australia and at the Women’s World Cup in Paris last December. Later this month Jacinta will be competing in the Wheelchair Rugby World Challenge in Adelaide facing teams from Australia, Canada, Brazil, Germany, and the Netherlands before going to Japan in late July for another tournament.
The Burwood Hospital Spinal Unit and Stroke Rehabilitation physiotherapists participated in a friendly competition during their lunch break last week. The aim was to raise awareness and funds for Stroke Aotearoa as part of the ‘Road to Recovery' fundraiser this May.

One in five women will experience a mental health issue during pregnancy or in the months after they give birth. Senior Clinical Psychologist Erin Helliwell presented on OCD to her Canterbury colleagues to highlight Maternal Mental Health Month in May. Erin’s talk covered how OCD presents in the perinatal population, how to recognise and assess this often missed or misclassified presentation, and to accurately assess risk.
Pink Shirt Day, which was celebrated on May 16, promoted working together to stop bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting kindness and inclusiveness.
Te Papa Hauora welcomed more than135 people into the Health Precinct this month to join their annual “We’re Talking Hauora” research talks, featuring top Canterbury researchers across their partner’s institutions. They also hosted two ‘Future Leaders’ programmes, designed to prepare final year health students in Canterbury for leadership in the workforce.
