Referral for surgical management of early pregnancy loss (miscarriage) is by the Early Pregnancy Assessment Service at Canterbury DHB.
The Gynaecology Procedure Unit (GPU) provides first trimester termination of pregnancy (4-13 weeks) and assessment for second trimester pregnancy. The service is available for people from the Canterbury district area, and also accepts referrals from South Canterbury and West Coast districts.
If you are considering an abortion, it is important that you consider all your options. It is also important that you have the support to make the decision that is right for you. You can talk to a health professional such as a GP, midwife, Family Planning or GPU about your options to find out about abortion services that meet your needs. They can provide non-judgemental and unbiased counselling about your options.
You no longer need a GP referral to have an abortion.

There is public funding for appointments during early pregnancy, so your appointment to get a referral should be free if you are a New Zealand citizen or resident. As always, your medical appointment will be confidential.
The following information is required:
A health practitioner will complete an assessment prior to any abortion procedure. This is to determine which procedure is best for the person.
Abortion is performed in two ways;
After 13 weeks the abortion is arranged through Christchurch Women’s Hospital.
Counselling services are focused on supporting people with their decision. It is a professional, confidential and free service.
Counselling sessions are available to all people and providing time for discussion of options, procedures, and anxieties. People are not required to have counselling, but it must be available.
Pre-decision counselling is also offered when a person is unsure of their decision.
Appointments for counselling sessions can be made at any time by contacting the Gynaecology Procedure Unit 03 378 6386.
Te Whatu Ora are required to provide abortion services under the Abortion Bill 2020.

Colposcopy is a procedure used to assess cervical abnormalities using a colposcope. This is an outpatient procedure. New patients require a 30 minute appointment. Follow-up patients require a 15 minute appointment.
The Colposcopy Department provides colposcopy assessment, treatment of abnormal cervical cells and post-treatment follow up.
